Bible Study
In October 2009, some of us students and young(er) peeps started meeting together to look at the bible. We discovered that understanding God's word is easier to do with a small group compared to looking at it in your own time with God, because there are people to bounce ideas off and questions get asked that make you think. It's also easier than learning from sermons, because you have more time to digest big ideas and ask your own questions. So we love our weekly bible study, and are always amazed that we leave having grasped a big idea that is going to affect the way we think about our relationship with God.
We try to take God at his word and honestly listen to what God wants to say to us. At the start of the very first book we looked at as a group, 1 Corinthians, we saw that the only way we understand God is by his spirit helping us, so we don't rely on our own knowledge and human wisdom, but allow God to show us something we could never have realised by ourselves. It's a great time; we hang out, chat, banter, drink tea, eat biscuits and go on lots of tangents, but we really do enjoy the process of learning new things together and seeing God open our eyes. If it sounds like something you'd be interested in, you should definitely come along and dig your teeth into God's word!
Here are some thoughts from people that have come along:
"I get a lot from the bible study. I find it really fascinating to discuss it in depth with other people and try to figure out the meaning of difficult passages. It definitely helps discussing it with your peers and I really enjoy working out how it applies to your daily life." - Ben
"I think it's really helpful to discuss and struggle with a passage in a group because I find we get a better understanding by talking it through than if we just read it by ourselves.” - Alice
"To me the bible is more than just a collection of religious books and more than just a manual for how to live your life as a christian, it's the divinely inspired, living and active power of God and the ultimate revelation of his plan to bring us back into relationship with him through Jesus - a story that all of history unfolds." - Andrew
