St Thomas's has linked up with the Kigezi Diocese in Uganda through a Tearfund initiative known as Connected Church.
The Kigezi Diocese Water and Sanitation Programme (KDWSP) is part of the Anglican Church of Uganda. It works in communities in Uganda's mountainous south-west, where access to safe water and sanitation is limited. The objectives of the KDWSP are to provide improved water and sanitation facilities to 22,780 people and ongoing support to communities that have previously benefited from the project. The programme provides safe water to communities where many were spending three or four hours each day collecting water. The project has already improved general health and it means that children, mostly girls, who had previously had to fetch water can now attend school. KDWSP also trains community members to maintain and repair facilities to ensure they last.
As a church, St T's has committed to give £10,000 in the coming year to the project and also to pray for the programme and the local people. Regular updates (once a quarter) will be provided through the Mission Support Team, here through the website, and in the weekly bulletin.
There is even the possibility of an envisioning visit to the project by members from St Thomas's.
If you would like to become involved in this project look out for the regular updates or speak to a member of the Mission Support Team. Start now by praying:
- For new corporate donors to support the project.
- For the men of kigezi to get involved in the project, and overcome their past reluctance.
- For wisdom in responding to the changing patterns of rainfall.
